The Laaber Ruin, once a strategically important hilltop castle, served to control river crossings and a trade route in the Laber Valley.

History+

The castle's origins date back to the late 12th century, when it was built by the Knights of Laaber. This family, first mentioned in 1118 in connection with the founding of Reichenbach Monastery, gained a position through the castle's construction on behalf of Emperor Frederick II. Hadamar IV von Laaber, son of the minnesinger Hadamar III von Laber, served as mayor of Regensburg in 1367. After resigning, he fell into conflict with the city, leading to an attack and damage to the castle in 1389. In the 15th century, the castle passed into the possession of the Wittelsbachs, but was returned to Ulrich von Laaber in 1466.
