Lengenfeld Castle (Ruin)
Lengenfeld Castle is a castle ruin 2400 meters southwest of the church of Hausen im Tal, a district of the municipality of Beuron in the Sigmaringen district in Baden-Württemberg. The remains of the hilltop castle lie on a steep rock cliff, about 175 meters above the Danube and directly opposite Werenwag Castle.
Nothing is known about the castle, which was built in the 12th century. A connection with the village of Lengenfeld, located to the south on the Alb plateau, is suspected. Only a few wall remains of the former castle complex have been preserved.
Description+
A projecting rock ditch separates the former castle area from the plateau. This is followed by a smaller area, as a possible location for an outer bailey. The very small core castle, with a base area of approx. 16 x 16 meters, is shielded by another, not very wide and long neck ditch. The few wall remains within the core castle suggest a residential tower-like building (donjon) - wall thicknesses up to 1.50 m - and a gate. Small ashlar masonry predominates; larger ashlar stones are found in the northwest corner, visible from the valley. A rounded corner ashlar (70 x 33 x 40 centimeters) of the northwest corner of the donjon is noteworthy.
Since the location of outbuildings is unlikely on the narrow rock ridge sloping towards the valley edge, these could be located on the plateau fanning out in front of the castle rock.
