Lichtenfels Castle (Ruin)
Lichtenfels Castle is a high medieval castle ruin near Dornhan in the Rottweil district in Baden-Württemberg, Germany.
The ruin of the former hilltop castle is located between the Dornhan districts of Leinstetten and Bettenhausen at an altitude of about 500 m above sea level, overlooking the Glatt valley.
The castle, dating from the 12th century, was probably founded by the Counts of Hohenberg. The noble family of Lichtenfels was related to the Lords of Dettingen, with whom they shared a coat of arms.
The castle was first destroyed in the Battle of Leinstetten in 1298. In 1423, the castle was partially owned by the Counts of Zollern. In the 15th century, Countess Henriette of Württemberg had Lichtenfels besieged. Count Friedrich of Zollern was captured. The destroyed castle was not rebuilt and was abandoned in favor of Leinstetten Castle.
At the end of the 20th century, the castle ruin was owned by the Barons of Podewils and was extensively renovated.
Layout+
Of the former castle complex, remnants of the shield wall, which was fronted by a moat, have been preserved. The ruin is freely accessible.
