Liebau Castle (Ruin)

The first documented mention of Liebau Castle occurred in 1327 as “castrum lubawe.” During the 14th century, the castle changed hands when Heinrich the Elder, Vogt of Plauen, exchanged it with the Wettins. From 1441, the complex was owned by the Doelau family, who undertook renovations in the Renaissance style between 1500 and 1550, transforming the castle into a palatial estate. In 1640, Swedish mercenaries plundered the castle and set the stair tower on fire. The castle remained in the possession of the Doelau family until 1725, most recently under Gottlob Christian von Doelau and his wife Sophia Christina.
