Liebenberg Castle (Ruin) (Zell)

The origins of Liebenberg Castle are presumed to be around 1170, as Berthold Schenk von Liebenberg is mentioned as the first castellan around 1180. The complex consisted of a residential building with a tower and was surrounded by a curtain wall, with a neck ditch to the east providing additional protection. Later, the castle came into the possession of the Kyburgers, who handed it over to the Bishop of Strasbourg in 1244, only to receive it back immediately as a fief. After the extinction of the Kyburgers in 1264, Liebenberg remained under Habsburg rule with the Lords of Liebenberg until the last male representative, Berthold IV, died around 1300.
