The Liebeneck ruin, once a tower castle, stands above the Schwarzach valley near Mettendorf in the Middle Franconian district of Roth. Its history is closely linked to the noble family of Absberg.

History+

Liebeneck Castle was built by the Absbergers and was first documented in 1346. Knight Gottfried (Götz) von Absberg bore the epithet “ze Liebenekke” until 1351. His son Heinrich “von Rannburk” (Rumburg) had to cede the castle to Count Palatine Ruprecht I as a fief in 1377 after attacking the Seligenporten monastery. Although Heinrich again asserted claims in 1388, the Sulzbach regional court decided in 1416 that the fortress belonged to Count Palatine Johann von Neumarkt. The castle changed hands several times, including the Kemnater, Rauscher, Pirkenfels, Perlein, Gluck, and Köller families.
