Liebenstein Castle (Ruin)
Liebenstein Castle, now a ruin, stands on a granite cone immediately north of the Plößberg district of Liebenstein in the Upper Palatinate district of Tirschenreuth in Bavaria.
The hilltop castle was first mentioned in 1125. In 1292, the founding family of Liebenstein died out, and the castle was sold to Waldsassen Monastery. After 1634, the complex, which had previously been the seat of the judicial office, was no longer inhabited and fell into disrepair.
Description+
On the granite cone, which serves as the castle hill, there were several quarries until the 1950s, including one directly below the ruin itself. Only a few foundation walls of the keep are originally preserved, but parts of the walls have been rebuilt since summer 2007.
