The Lobenstein Ruin, a high medieval castle complex, stands on a conical hill above the center of Bad Lobenstein. Once strategically important for monitoring traffic on the connection route between Leipzig and Bamberg.

History+

The first documented mention of Lobenstein Castle occurred in 1250, when an Otto von Lobenstein was named as its representative. In the 14th century, the fortress passed into the possession of the Vögte of Gera. It served as a residence until 1601, from 1597 under the younger line of Reuß. By around 1600, the castle was already in a state of severe decay, prompting the Reuß family to move to a nearby castle.
