The remains of the Castle can be visited

The ruins of Manegg Castle, a former fortress, are on a side ridge of the Albisgrat above Leimbach, a district of the city of Zurich. Although its builders are unknown, it is linked with the knightly family of Manesse, who had their ancestral seat here for over a century.

History+

The first documented mention of Manegg Castle dates back to 1303. It served as the ancestral seat of the Manesse family, who rose from merchants to knights through their wealth and became a prominent Zurich family as feudal lords of the Fraumünster Abbey, Einsiedeln Monastery, and the Holy Roman Empire. The family gained renown through the Manesse Codex, commissioned around 1300.
