Megling Castle (Ruin)

Megling Castle was a castle above the Stampflberg, about 200 meters above the Inn river, in the district of Au am Inn, part of the market town of Gars am Inn in the Mühldorf am Inn district of Bavaria. The former keep of the castle, a box-shaped three-story building with a steep half-hipped roof, is preserved and is now also referred to as Stampfl Castle or Stampflschlössl.

Until the beginning of the 13th century, the Counts of Megling resided in their ancestral castle and exercised the Vogtship over the Augustinian canons' monasteries of Au am Inn and Gars.

Today, bossage stones still bear witness to the defensibility of the hilltop castle, which was protected on three sides by steep slopes. According to legend, robber knights are said to have blocked the Inn with iron chains to plunder passing ships. There is also said to have been a secret passage, now buried, leading down to the Inn.
