Merenberg Castle (Ruin)
The Merenberg Ruin is situated on a basalt cone above the municipality in Hesse.
History+
The Merenberg Castle was first documented in 1129. From 1163, it belonged to the dominion of Gleiberg and was held by the Merenberg family, who exercised comital rights there. In 1333, the castle came into the possession of the Nassau-Weilburg line through marriage and served as a summer residence. From the 13th to the 14th century, it was occupied by lower-nobility castellans, and later in the 16th and 17th centuries, it was administered by an official. During the Thirty Years' War, the castle was destroyed in 1654.

Remaining from the complex are the round keep, a corner section of the three-story palas, and remnants of the outer walls and cellars.
