Merenberg Castle (Ruin)
Merenburg Castle is a medieval castle ruin on a basalt cone above the municipality of Merenberg in the Hessian district of Limburg-Weilburg.
Merenburg Castle is first mentioned in a document in 1129 and from 1163 was under the rule of Gleiberg and, with some "Centen" (administrative districts) and comital rights, with the Merenbergers.
In 1333, the castle came to the Nassau-Weilburg line through marriage, became a summer residence, was occupied by lower noble castellans from the 13th/14th century, and by an "Amtmann" (bailiff) in the 16th/17th century. In 1654, during the Thirty Years' War, the castle was destroyed.
The castle has a widely visible round keep. A corner of the three-story palas and remnants of outer walls and cellars have been preserved.
