Miel Castle (Ruin)

The oldest records from Miel date back to 1140. The castle was probably built even earlier.

The first documented owner was a knight named "Gerhard von Miele". The castle remained in the possession of his family until the 14th century. After the family died out, the castle changed hands several times.

In 1564, the castle was acquired by the von Salm-Reifferscheidt family, who had it rebuilt into a Renaissance castle. The castle was severely damaged during the Thirty Years' War but was rebuilt afterwards.

In 1700, the castle came into the possession of the Imperial Count Johann Ludwig von Nassau-Usingen, who had it converted into a baroque palace. The famous architect Johann Conrad Schlaun was commissioned with the planning. The construction work lasted until 1720.

In the following centuries, Miel Castle remained in the possession of the Nassau-Usingen family. In 1815, it became part of the Kingdom of Prussia. In the 19th century, the castle was extensively renovated and modernized.

During the Second World War, the castle was again damaged but was rebuilt after the war. Today, Miel Castle is privately owned and is used as a hotel and event venue. It is also a popular destination for tourists and history enthusiasts.
