The Mörnsheim Ruin, also known as Staffelburg, is on the Schlossberg above the Gailachtal valley in Bavaria. This former hilltop castle, whose origins date back to the 10th century, offers a glimpse into bygone eras.

History+

The beginnings of Mörnsheim Castle are presumed to be in the 10th century, likely founded by the Lords of Mörnsheim. The first documented mention occurred in 1225. Between 1225 and 1228, Bishop Heinrich I von Zipplingen had a keep made of ashlar blocks erected. In 1281, the complex was referred to as “castrum Mornsheim.” Bishop Konrad II von Pfeffenhausen ordered the construction of a surrounding wall, while Bishop Friedrich IV, Count of Oettingen, reinforced the existing buildings and walls and expanded the castle with a zwinger. Under Albrecht II von Hohenrechberg, a deep neck ditch was excavated on the southeast side, along with a curtain wall featuring towers and battlements.
