Moosburg Castle (Ruin) (Effretikon)

The origins of Moosburg date back to 1254, when Count Hartmann IV of Kyburg had it built for his wife Margaretha of Savoy. After the childless couple's death, the castle passed to the Habsburgs in 1273, who enfeoffed it to the Lords of Schlatt ZH around 1300. In 1386, the Moosburg was destroyed by the people of Zurich. Around 1400, Burkhard von Schlatt pledged the complex to Johannes Schwend the Elder, after which it served as an administrative seat for lower courts. Johannes Schwend's son, of the same name and the first Zurich bailiff of the Kyburg county, resided in the castle from 1424 to 1437. During the Old Zurich War, Moosburg was again destroyed in May 1444 by Central Swiss troops and subsequently used as a quarry.
