In Pfeffingen in the canton of Basel-Landschaft, Switzerland, the Münchsberg ruin, a castle complex from the 13th century, is on a rocky ridge.

History+

Münchsberg Castle was built in the second half of the 13th century, after 1286, by Konrad III. Münch, a member of the Basel noble family Münch. The construction of the castle likely served to curb the expansion of power of the nearby Schaler family. In 1318, Konrad IV. Münch, the son of the builder, handed the castle over to the Bishop of Basel and received it back as a fief, a common practice to secure property under the protection of a more powerful lord.
