In Arnstadt stands the Neideck Ruin, what remains of a moated castle. Today, the castle tower is the most visible element of this structure in Thuringia.

History+

Between 1553 and 1560, Count Günther XLI. of Schwarzburg had a Renaissance castle built on this site. It was erected on the foundations of an older Hersfeld Castle, which was mentioned as early as 1273. Neideck Castle served as the residence for the Counts of Schwarzburg-Arnstadt, elevating Arnstadt to a residential city. Following the death of Prince Anton Günther II. in 1716, the princely seat was moved to Sondershausen.
