Neu-Schauenburg Castle (Ruin)

The origins of Neu-Schauenburg date back to the 12th century, as evidenced by pottery finds indicating an earlier structure. The visible remains of the walls today mainly date from the 13th century. The castle was likely built by a branch of the Truchsesses of Rheinfelden, who later called themselves Lords of Schauenburg, to secure their cleared land. After the Basel earthquake of 1356, Neu-Schauenburg was repaired, while the nearby Alt-Schauenburg was abandoned – hence the suffix "neu" (new) for the continuously used complex.
