Neuenburg Castle (Ruin)

Neuenburg Castle was built after 1300 as the new seat of a branch of the Lords of Sulzberg, who had previously split into two lines. It replaced an older ministerialis castle and was therefore called “new castle” or “Neusulzberg”. After the death of the last male heir of the Neuenburg line in 1380, the castle passed to the Lords of Schellenberg. In 1408, the Prince-Bishopric of Kempten appointed a bailiff to the castle, and in 1421, the Schellenbergs sold their fief to the abbey, which was confirmed by the emperor in 1436. From 1455, the complex served as a correctional facility. During the Peasants' War in 1525, rebels are said to have been imprisoned and tortured here.
