Neujochenstein Castle (Ruin)
The castle ruin Neujochenstein is the ruin of a hilltop castle near Jochenstein on an elevation above the Danube at the edge of the district Riedl of the municipality Untergriesbach in the district Passau in Bavaria.
Neujochenstein Castle was presumably founded due to lack of space at Altjochenstein Castle, which is only a few hundred meters away, and was first mentioned in a document in 1299, when its owner Eberwein von Jochenstein granted extensive access rights to Bishop Wernhard von Passau (Prince-Bishopric of Passau). In 1310, the castle was sold and occupied by administrators until the 16th century. After that, the castle quickly fell into disrepair.
In 2007, the municipality of Untergriesbach carried out renovation work on the remains of the castle.
Still preserved from the castle complex are a striking corner of the keep, large remains of the moat system, and some building depressions.
