The Neujochenstein Ruin, a former hilltop castle, stands on an elevation above the Danube in the Bavarian district of Passau. Its origins are closely linked to the nearby Altjochenstein Castle, which likely necessitated a new foundation due to lack of space.

History+

The first documented mention of Neujochenstein Castle dates back to 1299. At that time, its owner, Eberwein von Jochenstein, granted extensive access rights to Bishop Wernhard of Passau. As early as 1310, the castle changed hands and was subsequently managed by caretakers until the 16th century. Following this, the complex rapidly fell into disrepair. In 2007, the municipality of Untergriesbach carried out restoration work on the remaining wall fragments.
