Neurandsberg Castle (Ruin)

The castle ruin of Neurandsberg Castle is located above the village of the same name. The village of Neurandsberg is a district of the municipality of Rattenberg in the district of Straubing-Bogen, administrative region of Lower Bavaria.

Today, remains of the curtain wall of the core castle and remains of a Zwinger wall with half-shell towers are still preserved from the medieval complex.

Below the hilltop castle, near the site of the former castle chapel, a pilgrimage church was built between 1698 and 1700. In the pilgrimage church of Mariä Geburt (St. Mary's Nativity) there is a seated statue of Mary with the infant Jesus from around 1460, which was previously in the castle chapel. The oldest of the preserved votive tablets dates from 1682. The church's furnishings are late Baroque.

The Lords of Rampsberg (Ramsperger) appear from the middle of the 12th century as ministerials of the Counts of Bogen and also of the Prince-Bishopric of Passau. Around 1330, a Friedrich Ramsperger built Neurandsberg Castle only a short distance south of the family's ancestral castle in Altrandsberg.

In the first half of the 15th century, the Lords of Rampsberg seem to have come into conflict with the law, because after 1436 Haimeran Heuraus conquered the castle on behalf of Duke Albrecht III (1438–1460).

Subsequently, various families owned the castle, such as the Barons of Notthafft around 1550. After them, the castle became a Bavarian administrative office (Pflegamt) and later served as a prison.

During the Thirty Years' War, the castle was destroyed in 1633 by Swedish troops under Dragoon Colonel Georg Christoph von Taupadel. Reconstruction did not take place.
