Niedergundelfingen Castle (Ruin)

The origins of Niedergundelfingen Castle likely date back to around 1080, when it was built as the ancestral seat of the Lords of Gundelfingen. Around 1250, it was expanded under Knight Swigger IX. de Novogundelfing, who is documented as Swigger von Neugundelfingen in 1264 and 1268. In 1407, Friedrich III sold the properties to Jörg von Woellwarth, who, just two years later in 1409, resold them to Wolf von Stein zu Klingenstein. Before 1617, ownership passed to the Reichlin von Meldegg family. By 1700, the complex included not only the castle but also a chapel, a bakehouse, barns, and stables, as well as extensive lands. In 1833, Baron Reichlin sold the castle to private individuals. After several changes of ownership, school councilor Freytag acquired the ruin and established a residence there. Following a partial collapse of the curtain wall in 1966, reconstruction measures were undertaken.
