Nollig Castle (Ruin) (Lorch)
The Nollig ruin, also known by various other names, is situated on a ridge northwest of the town of Lorch on the Middle Rhine. This rectangular structure is interpreted more as a former watchtower than a classic hilltop castle, which could also be inhabited if necessary.
History+
The construction of the building took place around the beginning of the 14th century as a three-story half-timbered structure. Shortly thereafter, it was encased in a massive wall and thus reinforced. Towards the mountain, it was protected by a neck ditch and a curtain wall flanked by two lateral round towers. Whether the tower was part of the local town fortification is still a matter of debate; however, the continuation of the curtain wall to the side of the tower suggests such an intention.
