Nyköping Castle

In the 12th century, a castellum was built on this site, which was expanded into a castle in the 13th century. Through further enhancements, Nyköpingshus evolved into one of Sweden's most significant fortresses. At the beginning of the 14th century, the castle played a tragic role in the conflict between the brothers Birger, Erik, and Valdemar Magnusson. King Birger was imprisoned here, and a few years later, his brothers Erik and Valdemar died in its dungeons. Following a subsequent uprising, the castle was destroyed in 1318. Approximately 50 years later, the castle was rebuilt, and over the following centuries, the complex was continuously redesigned and expanded. In 1574, Nyköpingshus became the residence of Duke Karl, later King Karl IX, who had the castle converted into a Renaissance palace. A devastating city fire in 1665 destroyed the palace, which was not rebuilt thereafter. In the 18th century, a residence for the provincial governor was erected within the old walls. Later, the complex served as a prison.

The Nyköpingshus ruin is located in Nyköping, in the Nyköping district, in the Södermanland region, Sweden, at an elevation of approximately 14 meters above sea level.

Today, the complex houses a museum and a restaurant. Some areas of the castle were restored in the 20th century and now host permanent exhibitions of the Sörmlands museum.
