Ober-Falkenstein Castle (Ruin)

Ober-Falkenstein Castle, also known as Alt-Falkenstein or Rachelburg, is a ruined castle located in the municipality of Flintsbach am Inn in the district of Rosenheim, Bavaria.

The hilltop castle was situated on the Rachelfelsen, approximately 400 meters above the Inn river. Its remaining wall fragments are now difficult to find, hidden deep in the forest below Petersberg and above the Rachelwand.

Also referred to as the "Troy of the Inn Valley," the castle complex holds special archaeological significance. Excavations suggest that a Bronze Age settlement was already present here. Further exploratory excavations in 1991 and 1994 in the Burgau below the complex yielded significant archaeozoological and rock magnetic findings.

Ober-Falkenstein Castle is believed to have been built by Bishop Albuin of Brixen and the Aribonids. The complex was first mentioned as Falkenstein Castle in 1120. After the decline of the Falkensteiners, it was destroyed in 1296 during armed conflicts between Duke Rudolf of Bavaria and the descendants of Count Meinhard II of Tyrol.
