Ober-Falkenstein Castle (Ruin)
The Ober-Falkenstein ruin, also known as Alt-Falkenstein or Rachelburg, is a hilltop castle whose remains are located on the Rachelfelsen in Flintsbach am Inn. It is archaeologically significant, as excavations provided evidence of a Bronze Age settlement, and further investigations uncovered important archaeozoological and rock magnetic findings.
History+
The construction of Ober-Falkenstein Castle is attributed to Bishop Albuin of Brixen and the Aribonids. Its first documentary mention as Falkenstein Castle occurred in 1120. After the decline of the Falkenstein family, the complex was destroyed in 1296 during armed conflicts between Duke Rudolf of Bavaria and the descendants of Count Meinhard II of Tyrol.
