On the Cheerhübeli in the municipality of Köniz stands the ruin of Oberwangen, a medieval residential tower. The structure was built in the 12th century.

History+

The origins of the Oberwangen ruin date back to the 12th century, when the residential tower presumably served as the ancestral castle of the Knights of Wangen. The noble family of Wangen was first mentioned in documents in 1142. An event in the castle's history was its destruction in 1298 by the city-state of Bern, during the Battle of Dornbühl. Following this defeat, the castle was not rebuilt.
