Oberwangen Castle (Ruin) (Köniz)
The Oberwangen ruin was a medieval residential tower from the 12th century and is located in the municipality of Köniz in the canton of Bern.
The ruin is located on the Cheerhübeli. The floor plan is almost rectangular (13.8 x 15m) and the wall thickness at the base is 2.2 m. The residential tower was most likely the ancestral castle of the Knights of Wangen. The noble family of Wangen was first mentioned in a document in 1142. In 1298, the castle was destroyed by the city-state of Bern and not rebuilt (Battle of Dornbühl). Today, the ruin is owned by the Oberwangen local association and is a viewpoint with a barbecue area.
