Seligenstadt Castle (Ruin)

The exact time of the imperial palace's foundation in Seligenstadt is not definitively documented. Seligenstadt itself has a long settlement history, ranging from Roman forts to Alamannic traces. The site was first mentioned in 815 as Obermühlheim when Louis the Pious gifted it to Einhard. A document from Emperor Frederick Barbarossa in 1188, issued in Seligenstadt, confirms an imperial diet but is not definitive proof of a palace complex at that time. The existence of the palace is only confirmed in the mid-13th century under Emperor Frederick II. It was situated on the old Main road and was also referred to as “castrum,” “keysirhaus,” or “rotes Schloß.” In 1460, the palace was destroyed by fire.
