Pontaningen Castle (Ruin) (Tujetsch)

The exact period of the castle's construction is not documented, but based on its architectural style, it is presumed to have been built around 1200. The ministerial family of Pontaningen was first mentioned in official records in 1252 with Knight Wilhelm. This family frequently served the Disentis monastery in various capacities, yet also appeared as its adversaries in 1278. In 1300, the castle itself was mentioned when Abbot Nikolaus of Disentis transferred serfs near "castrum Bultringen" to Wettingen Abbey. Heinrich von Pontaningen was the monastery's bailiff in 1391, and Wilhelm served as Amman of Disentis at the beginning of the 15th century. A figure was Peter von Pontaningen, who was Abbot of Disentis from 1402 to 1438 and played a role in the formation of the Upper League, which led to the Grey League in 1424. The Pontaningen family can be traced until the mid-16th century.
