Rappenstein (Untervaz)

The construction period of Rappenstein Castle is dated to the mid-13th century based on structural features and dendrochronological investigations. However, who commissioned the castle's construction is unknown, as no written documents mentioning Rappenstein exist. The origin of the name is also not entirely clear; it may derive from the noble merchant family Mötteli, who acquired ownership of the castle around 1450. The Möttelis were related to the Knights Thumb von Neuburg. It is presumed that Rappenstein may have been an early seat of the Thumb family in Untervaz, as it predates the Neuburg castle built around 1300.
