A medieval hilltop castle, the Rauschenberg ruin stands on a summit above the town of the same name in the Marburg-Biedenkopf district of Hesse. Its history is closely linked to the Fulda Abbey and the Landgraves of Hesse, before it was destroyed during the Thirty Years' War.

The origins of Rauschenberg Castle likely date back to the 11th or 12th century, when it was built on behalf of the Fulda Abbey. Its first documented mention occurred in 1219. It served as the administrative seat of the Ziegenhain office of Rauschenberg and, at times, as a dower house for countesses. After 1300, parts of the castle came into the possession of the Münzenberg family. In 1434, it became a Ziegenhain fief of Landgrave Ludwig I of Hesse. After 1450, when the County of Ziegenhain fell to the Hessian Landgraves, the complex continued to be used as a hunting lodge.
