Reschenstein Castle (Ruin)
The Reschenstein Ruin, once a spur castle, sits on a wooded ridge above a loop of the Ilz river near the Passau district of Hals. Originally built as an outwork of Hals Castle.
History+
The medieval complex, with its square keep, was first mentioned in written records in 1384. At the beginning of the 16th century, Reschenstein served as a residence for an episcopal administrator, but was later abandoned and left to decay. In 1690, the castle reverted to the County of Hals through a border treaty. Between 1816 and 1819, parts of its walls were used for the construction of the parish church in Hals. In 1907, Franz Stockbauer, the founder of the Passau Löwenbrauerei, acquired the castle and had it converted into a country estate. Towards the end of World War II, it temporarily served as a refugee camp and is now privately owned.
