Rettenberg (Vorderburg) Castle (Ruin)

The origins of Rettenberg Castle date back to the early 12th century, when it was built around 1100 as the ancestral seat of the Lords of Rettenberg. This family, considered the noble lineage in the Oberallgäu, was initially likely in Welf service and later joined the Staufer. In the 12th century, the Lords of Trauchburg and Hohenegg branched off from them. Around 1350, Heinrich von Rettenberg died without male heirs, and the property was divided among his daughters. Shortly thereafter, in 1351, the sisters sold Rettenberg to the Prince-Bishopric of Augsburg. The castle subsequently served as the seat of an administrative district.
