Rheinberg Castle (Ruin) (Lorch)

The origins of Rheinberg Castle likely date back to 1165, when the Archbishop of Mainz had an initial structure built. Five years later, in 1170, it was granted to the Rheingrafen as a fief of Kurmainz. A significant event was the siege and destruction of the castle in 1280 by the Mainz forces, following a feud with Rheingraf Siegfrid von Rheinberg the previous year. For this siege, the nearby Blideneck Castle and the Aachener Schanze were even built. Between 1280 and 1315, reconstruction took place, during which the current keep was also erected.
