Richstein Castle (Ruin)
Richstein Castle was located on a mountain above the village of the same name. Richstein is a district of the town of Bad Berleburg in the Siegen-Wittgenstein district in North Rhine-Westphalia.
The hilltop castle was probably only built in the second half of the 14th century. It was first mentioned in a document in 1384. In that year, Landgrave Hermann II of Hesse handed over the castle as a fief to Count Johann I of Sayn-Wittgenstein (1384–1427). The feudal relationship was confirmed in 1416, 1427, and 1490.
As early as 1415, bailiffs of the Counts of Sayn-Wittgenstein resided in the castle. In 1502, Count Wilhelm the Elder of Sayn-Wittgenstein (1494–1568) assigned the castle to his wife Johannetta von Isenburg as a widow's residence.
After the castle complex had become militarily worthless, it fell into disrepair in the second half of the 16th century. Today, the former castle complex shows only minor foundation remains.
