Rieshofen Castle (Ruin)

The origins of Rieshofen Castle date back to around 1290, when it was built as the seat of the Lords of Rieshofen, a family of ministeriales of the Prince-Bishopric of Eichstätt. The family was first mentioned in a document in 1337 with “Pertholt de Rodeshouven”. As early as 1310, the widow Elsbeth von Rieshofen was forced to sell the fief to the Eichstätt Cathedral Chapter, even though her sons were still alive. The Cathedral Chapter subsequently appointed caretakers to the castle, including Knight Ulrich von Morsbach in 1346 and Burkhard Reichtershofer in 1406/07. The last maintenance work on the bridge was carried out around 1484. By 1561, the complex was already referred to as a “Burgstall,” indicating its ruinous state.
