Ringenberg Castle (Ruin)

Ringenberg Castle, also known as Ringenburg, is a castle ruin on a promontory near the district of Ringenberg in the municipality of Maierhöfen in the Swabian district of Lindau in Bavaria.

The hilltop castle was built around 1230 by the Lords of Ringenberg and was first mentioned in 1291 with a knight of Ringenburg, also called von Horben zu Ringenberg. The Horben zu Ringenberg were knights and vassals of the Counts of Montfort-Bregenz. In the middle of the 15th century, the castle passed into the possession of the Horben zu Ringenberg and was sold by them in 1776 due to over-indebtedness to the farmer Anton Wagner (thereafter called "Schlossbauer") and fell into disrepair after 1776. In 1832, the Horber family died out with Baron Anselm von Horben zu Ringenberg. The castle tower remained inhabited until 1892.

The former castle complex featured a 33 by 20 meter main castle with a round tower in the north corner and the south tip, a crescent-shaped neck ditch in the northwest, and a 70 by 50 meter outer bailey in the west. Today, the complex only shows wall remains of the main and outer bailey, as well as tower remains and remnants of the neck ditch.
