Ringstaholm Castle (Ruin)
The Ringstaholm ruin, once a significant castle, is located in the Swedish province of Östergötland near Norrköping. Although only a few wall remnants remain today, it was once one of Sweden's most powerful strongholds and played an important role in regional history.
History+
The first mention of Ringstaholm dates back to 1316. In 1377, it came into the possession of Bo Jonsson Grip through an exchange and served as an administrative seat for his bailiffs, who controlled the surrounding hundreds of Ringstholms län. The crown confiscated the castle in 1404. Later, in 1425, Eric of Pomerania appointed Henrik Styke as provincial administrator, who had to abandon the castle during the Engelbrekt Uprising. In early 1470, the then owner, Knight Trotte Karlsson, was expelled, and the complex was set on fire. Archaeological investigations have shown that parts of the castle hill were artificially raised. It is believed that King Charles VIII of Sweden was born here.
