The Runding ruin, once the largest castle complex in the Bavarian Forest, sits atop the “Schloßberg” above the municipality of Runding. Although only remnants remain today, they give an impression of the former grandeur and significance of this hilltop castle in the Upper Palatinate district of Cham.

History+

The origins of Runding Castle date back to before 1100, when it was likely built by the Runtinger family, vassals of the Margraves of Cham and Vohburg. The family was first documented in 1118. After the Runtinger line died out in the early 15th century, the castle came into the possession of the Notthafft family in 1415, who expanded it into a castle complex. The Hussite Wars and the Thirty Years' War brought destruction, including looting by Swedish troops in 1633 and 1641.
