Salmendingen Castle (Ruin)

Presumably built in the 13th century by the noble "Lords of Salmendingen" as their ancestral seat, Salmendingen Castle was first documented in 1245. The family also owned estates and rights near Erpfingen, including Hohenerpfingen Castle. In 1350, the castle passed into the possession of Burkhard Schilling von Mansberg through his marriage to Agate von Salmendingen. Alliances between the Dukes of Teck, the House of Habsburg, and the Counts of Hohenberg repeatedly led the Lords of Mansberg into conflicts with the Counts of Württemberg. In the 14th century, Salmendingen Castle was destroyed as a result of these disputes and left to decay from 1386 onwards. The former Salmendingen territory fell to the Princely House of Fürstenberg. In 1394, the descendants of Agate von Salmendingen and Burkhard von Mansberg renounced their claims in favor of Klaus and Wilhelm Ungelter.
