The Santa Maria in Calanca ruin, a castle tower, stands on an elongated plateau above the village of the same name. The complex offers insight into medieval defensive architecture and the region's history.

History+

The residential tower, whose construction is presumed to be around 1300, likely emerged on the remains of an older fortification. Although no direct construction documents exist, architectural features such as vaults and fireplaces point to this dating. Its construction is attributed to the Barons of Sax-Misox, who sought to expand their influence in Misox and Calanca Valley around that time. The tower was first mentioned in documents in the 15th century when it was owned by the Sax-Grono family.
