Saxenstein Castle (Ruin) (Obersaxen)

The origins of Saxenstein Castle likely date back to the early 13th century, as can be deduced from its construction style. It is believed to have once served as the seat of a ministerialis of the Barons of Rhäzüns. Written records of the castle only appear from the 15th century, for example, in connection with the settlement of an inheritance in 1468, where the “hoff Saxenstein” is mentioned. The castle also appears in documents in 1470. The name “Saxenstein” could be derived from the family name “Sax,” indicating a stone or castle of the Sax. It is presumed that the castle, like others in the region, was abandoned when the Walser settlers gained lower jurisdiction, rendering the presence of Rhäzüns ministeriales unnecessary.
