The ruins of Schadburg, a former castle with origins in the 12th century, once served to monitor important traffic routes in the Bern region.
History+
The construction of Schadburg took place in several phases during the 12th century. The first documentary mention of the complex dates back to 1240. Its strategic position suggests that it primarily served to secure and control the path between Brienz and Interlaken. A legend recounts that Baron Kuno von Ringgenberg began building a dungeon in the 13th century but was murdered before its completion.
