Schalksburg Castle (Ruin)

Schalksburg, formerly also known as Schaltzburg or Schalksberg, shows traces of human settlement dating back to the Bronze and La Tène ages. Pottery finds from these periods, as well as from the Roman era, attest to the early importance of the site. The actual castle complex was built around 1100, although fortifications likely existed before 900. In 1266, Schalksburg was first documented. After a division of the Hohenzollern line in 1288, it became the seat of Frederick I, known as the Younger. In the 14th century, Schalksburg developed into a complex spanning three hectares.
