Schauenburg Castle (Ruin)
The Schauenburg is the remnant of a hilltop castle on the 722-meter-high "Schaufelsen" at the edge of the Danube Valley, about three kilometers south of the municipality of Stetten am kalten Markt in the Sigmaringen district of Baden-Württemberg.
The name of the castle derives from the Old High German "scouwa" or Middle High German "Schouwe," meaning watchtower or lookout. The hilltop castle was presumably built during the 13th century by the Knights of Schauenburg; a Gotwinus de Schowenberc is documented from the year 1270. He possibly came from a ministerial family of the Counts of Hohenberg.
In 1430, the Schauenburg was destroyed by the Counts of Sigmaringen. Later, in 1497, the ruin was mentioned as "Schowenberg das burgstall" in the possession of the Lords of Hausen.

Of the former castle complex on a mountain ridge at the steep drop to the Danube Valley, minor wall remnants have been preserved on the northwest side, as well as remnants of a building made of roughly hewn small ashlar stones on the southeast side. Two small ditch sections to the north and south delimit the approximately 22 x 28 meter core castle area on the castle rock, which drops vertically about 120 meters to the west.
