Schellenberg Castle (Ruin)

Schellenberg Castle was founded on August 23, 1347, by the Lords of Waldau on Waldthurn. Originally, it bore the name “Lug ins Land” (Look into the Land). Later, the castle was pledged to the Franconian knight Phillip von Guttenberg. During the Guttenberg Feud, a conflict between Phillip von Guttenberg and his brother Moritz on one side and the Margrave of Brandenburg-Kulmbach on the other, the castle was captured and destroyed on July 11 and 12, 1498, by Konrad von Wirsberg, the Margrave's captain. Although the Waldthurners later repurchased the ruin, it was not rebuilt.
