The Schleiz Ruin, once a castle complex, stands today in Thuringia. The remains of the round towers give insight into the past of this place.

History+

The origins of the complex trace back to a Slavic village that evolved into a castle settlement. The medieval castle was built by the Lords of Lobdeburg to protect an important connecting road between Nuremberg, Naumburg, and Leipzig. After the original castle fell victim to a fire in 1475, the Lords of Gera erected a new complex on the old foundations. From 1647 to 1848, the castle served as the residence of the Counts and later Princes Reuß-Schleiz. Another fire in 1689 also destroyed this complex, with the old keep, also called the Hausturm, being demolished.
