Near Hausen am Albis in the canton of Zurich, the Schnabelburg ruin, a former hilltop castle, sits at approximately 851 meters above sea level. Its history is marked by powerful noble families and a regicide that proved to be its undoing.

The origins of Schnabelburg likely date back to the 13th century, with archaeological findings suggesting a rapid construction. As early as 1185, Walter I von Eschenbach named himself after a newly built castle, though it is unclear if this was the current site. Following the death of the last Zähringer duke in 1218, with whom the castle lords were connected, the economic decline of the Eschenbach-Schnabelburg family began.
