Schöneberg Castle (Ruin) (Hofgeismar)

Around 1122, Count Hermann II of Winzenburg had Schöneberg Castle built to protect his lands. Following his assassination in 1152, the castle passed to the Archbishops of Mainz, who granted it as a fief to the Lords of Eberschütz, who later adopted the name "von Schonenberg" after the castle. In 1303, during hostilities between Electoral Mainz and the Landgraviate of Hesse, the Lords of Schonenberg pledged that the castle would always be open to the Archbishop. After the Mainz-Hessian War of 1427, in which the Landgraves were victorious, many Mainzer possessions in North Hesse came under Hessian rule.
