Schönenwerd (Dietikon)

Schönenwerd Castle was likely built at the beginning of the 12th century. Originally, it comprised a tower, a palas, a curtain wall, and a bailey. After a fire, the complex was rebuilt and expanded with two economic buildings. The Lords of Schönenwerd, first mentioned in documents from 1240, served the Habsburgs and held the vogtei rights over Dietikon-Oberdorf. In the 13th century, the castle became embroiled in the conflict between the Regensbergers and the city of Zurich. The Regensbergers planned to found a town called Glanzenberg and build a bridge over the Limmat, requiring the cooperation of the Schönenwerd knights. Zurich, however, opposed the bridge construction, fearing it would bypass its trade routes.
