Schülzburg Castle (Ruin)

The origins of Schülzburg are not entirely clear; evidence for a castle already built in the 12th century by the Counts of Warstein is lacking. It is confirmed that Knight Ernst Walter von Stadion acquired the site in 1329 through an exchange with the Cistercian monastery of Salem and shortly thereafter had the current castle complex built. In 1362, Eitel von Stadion enfeoffed the castle to Duke Rudolf III of Austria. Later, Schülzburg came into the possession of the Lords of Freyberg, who in 1374 renounced their claims in favor of Counts Eberhard II and Ulrich IV of Württemberg.
