Soyhieres Castle (Ruin)

The origins of Soyhières Castle date back to the 11th century, when it was built by the Counts of Soyhières. Although the comital family is mentioned in documents as early as the 12th century, the first written mention of the castle itself only appears in 1271. Together with the nearby Vorbourg, Soyhières played a significant role in controlling the trade route from Alsace. The complex adapted to the elongated rock, with the north side forming a natural, steep wall. Over its history, control of the castle passed from the Counts of Soyhières to the Ferrette and other noble families. During the Swabian War, the castle was set on fire and subsequently fell into disrepair. Jacques-Christophe de Blarer de Wartensee acquired it in 1576 for 800 guilders, and it remained in the bishop's possession until the French Revolution. In 1793, it was sold as a national asset to Georges Quinquerez. Later, the historian Auguste Quiquerez carried out restoration work and established a cabinet of antiquities. Since 1920, the castle has been owned by the Society of Friends of Soyhières Castle (SACS), which is dedicated to its preservation. Parts such as the oratory were restored before World War II, and the residential area in 1957.

The Soyhières ruin is located in the municipality of Soyhières in the Delémont district, Canton of Jura, Switzerland, at an altitude of approx. 461 m above sea level.

Visitors can explore the Soyhières ruin today. The site is continuously maintained and preserved by the Society of Friends of Soyhières Castle (SACS).
